The good Lord makes brilliant decisions every single day; giving the world to Aubrey Graham seems to be the latest, because he’s giving it all back.
In his latest visual for “God’s Plan”, directed by Karena Evans, Drake took to the streets of Miami to give away nearly a million dollars…just because. Groceries, toys, scholarships, donations (to the the University of Miami’s School of Music, the fire department, a women’s shelter, among others), shopping sprees, cars—even just passing out stacks like party flyers—Drizzy gave it all back. He even spent half the video dancing with Pittsburgh Steelers super-duper star receiver and Miami native Antonio Brown (and anytime that guy is dancing, it’s a gift).
The money donated was originally earmarked for video’s budget—Drake elected to put that money to a more meaningful use, rather than the standard Maybach rentals or elaborate travel destinations typically seen in pricey rap videos. And what ‘s only thing Drake has asked in return for his incredible generosity? That we all pay it forward. Via his Instagram story, Mr. OVO asked with his followers to “just go be kind in any way you can and let’s all watch the world be nice to each other even if it’s for 24 hours.”
Drake is tight with LeBron James, who recently came under a vicious attack from Fox News blowhard anchor Laura Ingraham. Ingraham inaccurately criticized James for criticizing the president, insinuating that because he’s a professional athlete, for some reason he’s not qualified to have an opinion on the direction of our country. She concluded her rant with “shut-up and dribble”—classic coded-racism at its finest.
What Ms. Ingraham might not realize is the herculean work James has done in the community. He has proven to be a man of the people, the same people that likely do not appreciate the president’s agenda, which includes belittling and disenfranchising people from or who are descendants of black and brown countries. Like James and Kevin Durant are today, hip-hop has long been in the crosshairs of Fox News and their dangerous rhetoric. They’ll never report on what Drake is doing though, so we’ll do it for them.
Ballin is cool, but Drake appears to have elevated from a life of stuntin to a life of service. “God’s Plan” has been the #1 song in the country for three straight weeks. Here’s to hoping this astounding video makes it four.
