Is it just me, or has the rap game really been lacking hot remixes lately?
Normally, somebody drops a hot record just before the start of the summer and everybody is rocking to it the entire season. Then every rapper and their mama comes out with their own version rapping over that same beat and an impromptu competition breaks out to see who can destroy the original record the most.
We’ve seen this in the past with “A Milli”, and to a lesser extent with “B.M.F.” and “Hard In Da Paint”. I’m shocked nobody has tried to flip Ross’ “Hold Me Back” yet. That’s a prime candidate for a remix by any of the game’s top MC’s.
It could be due to the lack of new mixtapes from major artists this summer, but that hasn’t stopped rappers before. We saw everybody rush to the booth to hop on “A Milli”, even R&B singers (as in multiple), regardless if they had a mixtape out or not.
Maybe no one beat has inspired the industry to that level yet. Or maybe nobody is paying attention. This Saturday will mark September 1st; it would be nice to see the rap game get behind one track and show off their mic skills before we’re all left singing…
